Considered Lovable? Part II

(photo from kochousephchittilappily.com)
For the believer, it’s now very easy to Google lists of scriptures that tell us who we are in Christ; scriptures that reveal God’s great love for us and the grace and mercy He pours over us. There are many, here are just a few:

But, even before we come to believe, when our understanding is lost in the lies the world perpetuates, there are plenty of scriptures that reveal God’s love for this people He has created in His image.

One of my favorites, very familiar to those of us with a pro-life stance is found in the book of Psalms. It’s a portion of scripture we fall back to in support of the idea that God knew us before we even came into this world and points to the great love He has for us, even before He formed us in our mother’s womb.

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thought, God! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand – when I awake, I am still with you.” – Psalm 139:13-18 (NIV)

In the preceding verses, the psalmist explores the notion that there is no where we can run to get away from God, because He’s everywhere and knows everything, even our thoughts before we think them.

(theosophical.wordpress.com)
In these verses, the psalmist declares the awe surrounding our creation, that God was there with us, knowing us and forming us before we took on human flesh; He created us with purpose and on purpose. Our days were ordained and written in some heavenly book before we took our first breath of air.

Whisper this to yourself or say it out loud: I was created on purpose, with a specific plan that only I can fulfill. I am the only key that unlocks certain doors in this universe. Without me, they’re left unopened.

How many doors in our world (of opportunity or beauty or revelation) are left unopened simply because life was snuffed out; perhaps even before birth or because sin distorted our lives for a season. If you’re still drawing breath, there’s still time to fulfill your destiny.

None of us was accidentally dropped onto planet Earth without a reason. Though we may often feel useless and unnecessary, which will make us feel unlovable – those feelings are driven by lies.

Just because someone doesn’t believe in our common enemy, Satan, doesn’t mean he doesn’t lie to them.

If I were never taught about the affects of gravity, it would still pull me to the ground if I stepped off a rooftop.

Satan must laugh loudest when he manipulates those who declare he isn’t real.

“The word of the LORD came to me, saying, ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.’” - Jeremiah 1:4-5 (NIV)

Before He clothes us in flesh, He knows us!

Before He placed us in our mother’s belly, He loves us!

Before our parents came together intimately, God already has a plan for us!

Before anything good or bad in this universe happens to us, God values us!

And while we’re walking along through this journey of life and all there is to discover along the way; all the things that mess us up, all the things we mess up – He’s continuously loving us. He’s wooing us, He’s teaching us, He’s holding us, He’s providing for us. (If you’ve never read the short book Acres of Diamonds, now might be a good time.)

Knowing how messy our lives would become, He made provision for all of it through His grace.

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8 (NIV)

And only He can love us like that. Our loving Creator atones for our mistakes.

Did You Have a Fuzzy-Haired Doll?

Yesterday morning in church I sat two rows behind a woman I see weekly. I don’t know her, but I can’t help noticing the “fuzzy” look to her hair – like that of a baby doll that’s been loved on a little too much, one that’s been held, slept with, played with, one who’s hair has been brushed and shampooed repeatedly. Immediately my mind went to the picture of a young girl holding her favorite doll, stroking its hair, smiling at her with a reassuring look that said no harm would come to her and she’d never abandon her for a newer, flashier toy.

The woman’s smile always catches my attention. There’s something special about it; smiles sometimes betray our heart. I’m never quite sure what’s just beyond the curl of her lips, it could be the extremely happy heart of God’s Princess that is loved beyond measure; her silent testimony of His love. It could be her expression to say, “Hello, I’d love to be your friend.” It could be the face she wants us to see instead of the one with tear stained cheeks and bloodshot eyes from personal sorrows. Sunday morning I found myself wanting to approach her and feel her hair, to smooth in with my own hand, like she was my own little girl, as I believe God does every day.

Can she be loved too much? No. But I want to know her, simply because Jesus does, and He loves her every minute of every hour of every day, just as He loves me.

Keeping my hands to myself, I’ve purposed in my heart – that next Sunday morning I’ll meet her face to face, smile to smile.

“When I smiled at them, they scarcely believed it; the light of my face was precious to them.” ~ Job 29:24 (NIV)

Thanks For The Love!

(imgkids.com)
While helping my daughter move I got to know one of her friends a little better. She’s a precious young woman, strong and tender, fun and gracious. But only having met her once before, I asked myself, ‘Why do I love her so much?’ As quickly as I asked myself the question, the answer came rushing to the forefront of my mind, ‘Because she loves my child so dearly.’
Before the words had completely formed in my brain, I heard a voice echo the sentiment. ‘Why do I love you so much? Because you love My Son so dearly.’

Giggling and welling up with tears at the same time I cherish the thought. God loves us even before we know Him. He’s loved us since before we entered this world. But what’s more exciting than being loved back?

I’m one of those people that just loves everyone. I may not always like a person’s behavior or agree with how they think, but it’s usually a pretty easy thing for me to truly love the people around me, and even those I haven’t actually even met in person yet. But my children’s friends hold a special place in my heart. I’m genuinely thankful that they love my children the way they do. And it hurts in an extremely painful way when one of those friends hurts or betrays my children. I can’t imagine the anguish our Father must feel.

When I see people loving each other – putting their love into action, I see the light of God in them. To see them loving my children, the joy makes me cry, literally.

2 Corinthians 4:6-7 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. (KJV)

Touch....

Old songs come to mind when I think about touching God. From ‘…reach out and touch the Lord as He goes by…’ to ‘…surely the presence of the Lord is in this place, I can feel His mighty power and His grace…’ But the one that captures the heart of my imagination is a Ray Boltz song that intrigued me the moment I heard the words. ‘With her hands she was touching Him, the Alpha, the Omega, the Beginning and the End, and with her hands she was holding on to His…’

The name of the song is Touching Him. It was a common request when I regularly sang for a multitude of churches, perhaps the audience could hear my sincere passion. I want to touch Him. I want to feel the touch of His fingers on mine, the warmth of His embrace, even just to touch the hem of His garment. I want my relationship with Him to be tangible. The song is about a woman Jesus had graciously forgiven. At His dinner host’s outrage, Jesus said; she, who is forgiven much, loves much, as she washed His feet with ointment mixed with her own tears and dried them with her hair. (Luke 7:36-50)

But how do you ‘feel’ God today? How do you ‘reach out and touch the Lord’? He’s no longer here in our midst to reach out and touch. Or is He? Look around. Who do you see? Doesn’t His Spirit reside there? Touch them, now. Feel your fingers tremble at the point of contact…..

The final chorus: ‘With your hands, are you touching Him, and with your heart, are you loving Him, and with your hands are you holding on to His? Then the source of life is right there in your hands.’

The Key to the Kingdom Part 4

Upon finding the verses, I began to read, “Rejoice in the Lord always, again I say rejoice!” I rolled my eyes and wanted to laugh and cry at the same time. I told the chaplain I planned to kill myself that night, and he wanted me to rejoice? What a loser! How dare he blow me off like that? Did he even know what these verses were going to say? Didn’t he think I was serious? Was there something more important than me on TV? Is this what chaplains got paid for? After pausing in frustration, I looked down to read again.

This is what I read. “Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Philippians 4:4-8 KJV

No, I didn’t understand everything I’d just read, but as I read those words, a peace came over me. Like a warm blanket being wrapped around me, like a warm, thick oil was being poured over me, I relaxed. It was probably the first time I felt peaceful and relaxed in years. That peace mentioned in verse 7 - this had to be that kind of peace. With a deep sigh of resignation, I had to admit, ‘There must be something to this! This isn’t just a religious book. There’s something here I have to have.’

More to come.....

Ezer Part 3

Any one we wish to receive love from is potentially in a very powerful place. We give them the keys to unlock the essence of what’s in our hearts, hoping to exchange with them the phenomenal source of life: love. But love is not always returned. Trust is often laughed at, behind our backs until the charade is revealed. Whether it’s a playground playmate that betrays our friendship or our first love that betrays our trust; the hurt our hearts suffer seems insurmountable. We learn to trust again, either out of hope or desperation. Someone comes along and sends out the signal that they can be trusted with our heart. Or someone comes into our life that challenges us to reach into their heart to love them. A knowing that there’s a place in them that needs to be caressed – and a place in us that needs to be filled.

I want to back up for just a moment to my opening greeting, which may have been puzzling. When God created man, He created us male and female. The female part was, in the original Hebrew, called the ezer. An ezer is one shaped to harmoniously fit together with the male part, but created to be his strong, warrior ally; the part of him that fights for him when he is weak or chooses not to battle himself. Together they can successfully bear the image of God and advance His kingdom. Nothing can frustrate our common enemy more, so he perpetually seeks to destroy the union between man and his ezers. To look at our society we find proof enough to see that the battle of the sexes rages forcefully.

We ezers often want independence and to tout superiority over the man instead of coming along side of man and stand in battle with him. Being fifty years old, I’ve encountered men along side of whom I would choose not to stand. But those are not the men that God has called me and created me to stand with. Through the years too, Satan has regularly lied to me and tried to tear me away from the man God created me to stand with. Praise be to God, Satan’s strategies, though powerful and hurt-filled, have not succeeded.

To be continued again....
