Are You Listening?

(photo from vedictruth.com)

I’m going to be transparent with you today. Maybe a little too transparent.

As a child, we see things differently than we do as grow ups, but sometimes those childhood thoughts stick with us. Even when we have the perspective of an adult, silly thoughts from yesteryear can wander through our minds at the most unexpected times.

I’ve always processed my thoughts differently than most people around me. In our decades of marriage, Dave has often told me he doesn’t know anyone who thinks like I do. I never took it any other way than complimentary. Sometimes, he even seems to admire the way I think.

I would guess, though I’ve never looked into it, that I’m somewhere on the autism spectrum. But perhaps we’re all somewhere on the spectrum. They say there’s a fine line between autism and genius. I’m not saying I’m a genius, but maybe I dance on that fine line. I’m not talking about common sense or even intelligence, but the way my brain processes my thoughts.

As a child, I just saw myself as different. Most children probably go through that phase at some point. But, I’ve carried the thought, intact, with me for the past 60 years or so. In childhood, I was convinced that I was “retarded” (the word used in that day), but that no one would tell me or admit it to me. Silly? Perhaps.

Over the years, the thought has crossed my mind from time to time.

Last night I was worshiping God with other women as praise music filled through the room and I prayed for those I love most. (I’m guessing your name was whispered to God, backed by volumes of faith for your every need.)

At one point, when God spoke to me, He shared a little secret with me. He said, “You know, Dave would still love you, even if you were retarded.” (I’m guessing He chose that word because it’s the word I used as a child.) It instantly took me back to feelings of insecurity. But then just as quickly, filled me with laughter.

Yes. Dave loves me that much. He’s definitely the man God created to be my husband. No one else would do. Not everyone marries the person God created specifically for them. Some of us get ahead of God or don’t even consider asking Him if the person they plan to marry has His approval.

Somehow, even though I didn’t know the voice of God way back when, I knew on our first date that Dave was the man I’d marry. There are plenty of times when we frustrate each other, even to this day, but neither of us has ever second-guessed our decision, even in the hardest of times.

The whole point in my vulnerability today is to tell you that God really does speak to us. His Word states, “Anyone with ears to hear, should listen and understand!” -  Matthew 11:15 (NLT) God isn’t merely saying that if you have globs of skin to hold up your glasses, you’ll hear Him. We have spiritual ears. We need to learn to listen with THOSE ears.

As a teen, on our first date, did I know I was hearing from God? No. But that didn’t stop Him from speaking to me. Like me, He always has something to say. Not so much like me, what He has to say is always worth listening to.

So, whether there’s praise music on or not, whether you’re alone or in a crowd, He’s talking to you. If you’re listening for His voice, you’ll hear Him. Listen! His Word also tells us, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” - John 10:27 (NKJV)

You may be tempted to say that you never hear Him. Or that He doesn’t bother to speak to you. You’re mistaken. There’s so much He wants to share with you. He wants you to know the depths of His love for you. It’s His desire to impart to us His knowledge, His wisdom and His understanding.

Pay attention. Listen. You’ll hear. It may surprise you. But, you’ll hear Him!

Sacred Space

(drawneartogod.com)
The other day I got together with a few friends, and the notion of protecting our sacred space came up. We didn’t really talk about it, it was just a thought to ponder on. I know, crazy, right? A handful of women, a great topic like that and no chatter about it, who would think it could happen?

What is our sacred space and why does it need protecting? I suppose I could come at this from several different points of view. Of course, my first thought was a question; protect it from what?

Should we be protecting that sacred space from negative outside influence? Or just respecting it as our own space to be shared with only God? Or should we be opening it up and welcoming others into it? Should our lives become that space? From a ponderer’s perspective, these are all valid points to ponder.

I want to hear what you think, as well. Personally, I’ve drawn the conclusion that yes, this sacred space needs our protection. And, I’ll admit that I thought differently, at the start of this.

(africamission-mafr.org)
My reasons for feeling this way are completely based on the definitions I found for the word sacred; you can journey to dictionary.com right here, if you’d like. That’s where I found my revelation. I also looked up the word, consecrated

An adjective, the very first line of definition starts us off: “devoted or dedicated to a deity or to some religious purpose; consecrated.” Clearly this space we’re talking about is, by definition, already devoted or dedicated, and not for the general public. The second line of definition includes “holy”. If we invited everyone to our sacred spaces, the holiness would quickly be trampled upon. Though one demands respect, it’s not always given.

(passagethroughgrace.com)
I found a smile crawl across my face as I made my way down to the sixth line of definition: “secured against violation….” Clearly, making no bones about it, this space is to be protected and revered, consecrated, set apart for spiritual purposes!

Now, what about that “space”? My favorite and closest dictionary choice tells me it’s: “the unlimited…three-dimensional realm or expanse in which all material objects are located and all events occur.” Line two of the definition draws that down for us: “the portion or extent of this in a given instance…”

(sffmc.com)
So, if my sacred space is defined as that holy portion of the unlimited three-dimensional realm I’m living in, then yes, I need to keep it holy and protected, an intimate place where I meet with God to grow our relationship!

(christianpost.com)
Yet, while enjoying that intimacy with the Creator of everything, and holding my sacred space dear, what I’m exposed to there should permeate every other part in my life, making me whole; and it should impact every person I meet, whether I share words with them or not.

Love is what grows in that sacred space, and love isn’t love if it isn’t shared generously.

Sing!

(picture from netmark.com)
Somewhere in my past I heard it said, when you sing, you pray twice. Maybe because it takes you twice as long to get the words out of your mouth, but more probably, because putting melody to our praise and prayers seems to make them a little more powerful, at least from a human perspective. We can allow ourselves to take it further, to enjoy it more and to lift it up higher, and even to receive more from God. In receiving more (more freedom, more encouragement, more healing, more of God’s power released into our lives) the more easily and freely we share it.

Just typing “I will sing” into the browser at Bible Gateway (KJV) brings up twenty-five scriptures, some of which are songs I’ve sung for a long time. And those I haven’t sung have probably been sung by someone at some point. This morning in church we sang  a song that caused my soul to rejoice greatly. It brought to mind a lot of old scripture songs I’ve sung over the years, and it also brought to mind all the reasons I have to praise God through song.

Some of the scriptures I know as song include:
“I will sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider’s thrown into the sea... The LORD my God, my strength, my song has now become my victory… The LORD is God and I shall praise Him, my father’s God and I will exalt Him….
Miriam grab your tambourine and praise the LORD and dance and sing and tell the people to shout the victory… The LORD, my God, my strength, my song has now become my victory… The LORD is God and I will praise Him, my father’s God and I will exalt Him...” Exodus 15:1-2 & 20 paraphrased.

(picture from keepcalmandposters.com)
“Thou hast turned my mourning into dancing for me; Thou hast put off my sackcloth. Thou hast turned my mourning into dancing for me and girded me with gladness; To the end that my glory may sing praise unto Thee and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto Thee forever…” – Psalm 30:11-12 paraphrased.

“I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever, I will sing; I will sing. I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever, I will sing of the mercies of the LORD. With my mouth will I make known Thy faithfulness; Thy faithfulness. With my mouth will I make known, Thy faithfulness to all generations….” – Psalm 89:1 paraphrased.

“I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live, I will give thanks to my God while I have my being. My meditation of Him shall be sweet, I will be glad, I will be glad in the Lord! Bless thou the LORD O my soul, praise ye the LORD. Bless thou the LORD O my soul, praise ye the LORD…” – Psalm 104:33-34 paraphrased.

Other songs that are no doubt in scripture as well, but just don’t pull up with that tag line include:
“I will sing, I will sing a song unto the LORD, I will sing, I will sing a song unto the LORD, I will sing, I will sing a song unto the LORD; hallelujah glory to His Name.”

“Sing unto the LORD a new song, sing unto the LORD all the earth; sing unto the LORD a new song, sing unto the LORD all the earth. For God is great, and greatly to be praised, God is great, and greatly to be praised……”

Scriptures, such as Psalm 103:1 (paraphrased) may not use the words, sing unto the LORD, but we sing them anyway: “Bless the LORD, O my soul and all that is within me, bless His holy Name.

And Psalm 103:2 (paraphrased) “Bless the LORD, O my soul and forget not all His benefits, Bless His holy Name, Bless the LORD, O my soul and forget not all His benefits…”

“Trust in the LORD with all of your heart, lean not on your own understanding, acknowledge the LORD in all of your ways, He will make your path straight.” – Psalm 3:5-6 paraphrased.

Psalm 61 is a beautiful song, as well. There are so many beautiful songs in scripture that as I look over them, my soul can’t help but rejoice and celebrate, taking me back to when I learned them and the blessings I was receiving at the time. Not only does my mouth sing, my heart sings!

How many of these songs do you know? Others you’d like to share with us? Where do they take you back to and what did God bless you with at the time? Where do they allow your spirit to soar now?

Are Praise and Worship Simply to Butter-Up?

Jesus Himself said, “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is a spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” John 4:23-24 (NIV)

Praise and worship is not to be used to “butter up” our Father. It’s given from a pure heart that wants nothing more than to climb up on to His lap and to love on Him and to take in His love. It’s not something we put out there trying to manipulate Him into giving us the things we want. He knows our hearts, our thought and intentions; do we really think we can our smart Him or put together a magic formula to make things go the way we want them to?

There are so many things I don’t understand. There are so many things I’d do differently than God is doing them – but only because I don’t always know why He’s doing them the way He does. I know that He sees the whole of everything, and that I merely catch glimpses of His kingdom as He sees it. Since I don’t see the end from the beginning like He does, I can’t possibly expect to see clearly why He does what He does, when He does it.

How many times have you said, or heard said, “Well, if I was God ____________”?

I’m relieved that none of us is God, with our limited scope of everything, we’d surely mess things up. And how many of us would have thought of grace all by ourselves?

The Psalmist wrote, “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.” Psalm 100:4 (NIV) He didn’t give us this instruction as a magic wand to gain entrance to the throne room of God for our own personal venues.

As Christians, we’re told, “God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus…..” Ephesians 2:6 (NIV)

We not only have permission to enter the God’s throne room, spiritually speaking, we’re sitting there already, with Jesus our Savior, as joint heirs with Him. God welcomes our thanks, our praise, our worship, our love, our obedience – and yearns to take us in His arms and love us in ways we still feel so unworthy to receive.

Twice in the gospels Jesus says, “…how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.” Matthew 23:27 & Luke 13:34 (NIV)

Let’s let go of our inhibitions, and like David, dance before the Lord, thanking Him, praising Him, honoring Him and worshiping Him with all that’s within us!

Matthew 6:33 tells us that when we seek first the kingdom of God, everything else will be given to us. So why do we seek the things and ignore the kingdom?

In My Impatience

Having just finished reading Loren Cunningham’s journeys through learning to hear God’s voice, I’d like to share with you a few points from his book, “Is That Really You, GOD?”

I bought the book a few Sundays ago, after listening to what Fred Markert had to say to our congregation about the days we’re living in. I’ll admit, both emotions of excitement and angst mingled within me that day, and have in the days since. I so want to be sure I’m hearing from God, and not submitting myself to any voice with a thin disguise begging at my senses to be the voice of my Father.

His stories filled me with awe, though some sounded so surreal as to be concocted in his own mind to fill the pages of his book with God-sounding sagas. Yet, I believe each story he told with conviction and feel them stirring an eager anticipation in my own soul.

Lately, I’ve grown weary waiting on God to move me to do something, or to plainly display before me the plans He has for me to fulfill; anticipating doing something worthy of a child of the great King. Yet, admittedly, the responsibility or being called to some noteworthy feat is more than overwhelming. I hate to advertise it, but some might rightfully consider me to be a rather lazy person.

That said and out of the way, I’ve been listening for God’s roar or His still, small voice to resound in my ears this week, as I’m away on a trip, mostly by myself with time to focus more on Him and less on day to day routine.

I began to fret as the minutes turned into hours and even days, without as much as a whisper from on high. As if I could hurry God and needed to spell out for Him that my alone time here is limited, I read through scripture, sifting His Word for some special nugget that would speak to me now.

Yes, the words in Loren Cunningham’s book have satisfied my hopes and I plan to share some of his points…..tomorrow. But, more so, my dear friend Desire Cruz sent me a text this afternoon, clearly prompted by God that saturated my hunger and encouraged me to tears. Right away, I sent it to my husband, who quickly ate up the message as a prophecy from God just for him. Timely words from a devotional book called, “Jesus Calling” by Sarah Young:

“I am the firm foundation on which you can dance and sing and celebrate My Presence. This is My high and holy calling for you, receive it as a precious gift. Glorifying and enjoying Me is a higher priority than maintaining a tidy structured life. Give up you’re striving to keep everything under control, an impossible task and a waste of precious energy. My guidance for each of My children is unique, that’s why listening to Me is so vital for your well being. Let Me prepare you for the day that awaits you and point you in the right direction. I am with you continually, so don’t be intimidated by fear. Though it stalks you, it cannot harm you. As you cling to My hand, keep your eyes on Me, enjoying peace in My Presence.”

Selah. (Ponder THAT!)
